Homemade Laundry Soap

Photo of a jug of laundry soap

A simple, low-cost laundry soap made from a few pantry-shelf staples — no synthetic fragrances or fillers, and it stores for months in a sealed jug.

What you'll need

Steps

  1. Grate the bar soap finely and dissolve it in a pot of hot water over low heat, stirring until fully melted.
  2. Stir in the washing soda and baking soda until dissolved.
  3. Pour the mixture into a clean gallon jug and top off with hot water; shake before each use.
  4. Let it sit overnight — it will thicken into a gel-like consistency.
Tip: Use 1/4 cup per load — it's more concentrated than store-bought detergent, so a little goes a long way.
