Seed Starting Mix

Photo of seedling trays with young sprouts

A light, well-draining blend gives seedlings the loose texture they need to sprout — garden soil alone is too dense and can harbor disease.

What you'll need

Steps

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large tub, breaking up any clumps.
  2. Moisten until the mix holds together loosely when squeezed but doesn't drip.
  3. Fill seed trays and sow according to seed packet depth.
Tip: Skip garden soil entirely for seed starting — it compacts in small trays and can carry damping-off fungus that kills young seedlings.
