Varnish Remover

Photo of bare wood being stripped of old finish

A warmed vinegar and oil soak softens old varnish for scraping — a slower process than chemical strippers, but with no toxic fumes.

What you'll need

Steps

  1. Warm the vinegar and oil together gently, then mix.
  2. Brush onto the varnished surface and let sit 15–20 minutes.
  3. Scrape off the softened varnish with the scraper, working with the grain.
  4. Wipe clean and repeat on any remaining spots.
Tip: Work in a well-ventilated space and test on a small area first — results vary with different varnish types and ages.
